George W. sez "Donate Life!"

No, seriously, it's an official proclaimation that April is National Donate Life month. Here's a link from UNOS's site that I like. It's called Donate Life America and is a good resource, in English and en Espanol, about donation. Check em out! And sign up to be an organ & tissue donor today. 90,000 people are counting on you.

Ugh, in my book, W's face does nothing to encourage organ and tissue donation. Good thing I'm already registred with my state's registry his pate splashed across your post would turn me off donation permamnentlt...and I'm a recipient too ;)

I hate to turn this into a political rant session, but comments like Tangent's demonstrate an appalling-but-all-too-common lack of perspective.

Tangent's logic goes like this: George Bush is bad. George Bush is in favor of [x]. Therefore, [x] must be bad. So presumably if George Bush came out in favor of (for example) free medical care for transplant recipients, Tangent would refuse, because (following the above logic) there must be something wrong with that if GWB supports it?

Organ donation helps people. It helps donor families, it helps transplant recipients, it helps the medical professionals involved in the care of both sides, and it helps society as a whole by restoring health to people who can turn into productive members. When he was in office, Bill Clinton made similar proclamations in favor of organ donation. The next president will do the same. It is (or should be) an issue that transcends politics. Trying to drag it down because of one's blind hatred of a particular politician serves no purpose other than to harm future recipients. Is that the kind of legacy you want to leave, Tangent?

Great post, T.C.

Jesus H. Christ, I had no idea a picture of W. would generate such heat. PJ, I'm glad you said it, because you said it much better than I would have. What do you think about the commenter in the last post-about an organ going to a prisoner? I haven't had time to write about that one yet.

I'm just waiting for some wiseacre to make a comment about W having already donated his brain...

More seriously, though, have any of the beautiful people (newscasters, Hollywood types, sports stars, etc.) made a commitment to being organ donors? Somehow I think that would make a bigger impression than a politician making the usual happy blandishments.

Bob: Michael Jordan (remember him?) was a major spokesperson for organ donation a few years ago. Actually, it was more than a few years ago...I think I'm showing my age here. More recently Katherine Heigl (herself the sister of an organ donor) has done some awareness work.

TC: Have to come back to you about the prisoner issue...running late already...

PJ,

Good to hear that about Michael Jordan - I still associate him with just basketball and Hanes undies!

Good also about Ms Heigl - I didn't recognize the name, but thanks to the internut I found her info at IMDB.com. Being on "Grey's Anatomy" (obviously I don't keep up with it) is definitely good visibility for organ donation awareness.
