BYO punchline

All I can say is, read this:

http://www.reuters.com/article/
oddlyEnoughNews/idUSL2831532320070529?feedType=RSS

Apparently a terminally ill dutch woman is going to appear on a game show to find a recipient for her organs. The article didn't mention what her illness is, I'm thinking she's vent dependant and is going to have herself taken off the vent to die? I guess I should be more offended, but this passes ludicrous and is on to surreal. The shows creators say it's going to highlight the need for organ donors. Mmmm, ok.

Well, I guess reality TV has used up all the sex angles, so they've moved on to death.

Here's a slightly easier link to the story: http://tinyurl.com/35q5yq.

But it is indeed bizarre.

I blogged about this story in a bit more detail here (from a UK perspective), if anyone's interested. Sounds thoroughly unethical to me.

TRy this article http://www.detnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070529/UPDATE/705290392/1020/NATION

They use the words "inoperable brain tumor" and "cancer"

Doesn't sound like an ideal donor to me.

I've tried to think up a more inappropriate theme for a game show... I can't. This one just leaves me numb.

I like your blog, btw. I've added you to my blogroll.

Just another reason why i will never be a donor.

What about immoral don't you understand?

Now that the Brits are mixing animal and human DNA, just let your dog grow your organs, or your chid.

It was actually a hoax....

NOOOOOOO!!!!!!! I have a whole post almost finished about this! Actually I'm glad it's a hoax, and it did get people talking about organ donation. Theatre of the absurd, but now what am I going to write about?

I'm so glad it was a hoax. I was suspicious since they said the prospective donor had a (disqualifying) brain tumor.

Oh, those dirty buggers!!!

Well, at least we can rest easy knowing that society hasn't completely gone down the drain... oh wait, I notice that the show "America's Got Talent" is back on the air this summer... so maybe it has. :)

Actually, a brain tumor doesn't necessarily rule out someone from being a donor. It depends on the type, if it has metastasized to the rest of the body, if it's been operated on or if the person has a VP shunt.

Too bad the story about the show- which I found completely disgusting and amoral- made big news but I didn't find out that it was a hoax until I read it here! I'm a strong believer in organ donation but there ARE better ways to publicize the need. Thanks again for the work you do.
